Tesla’s $25 Billion "Terafab" Bet: Why Elon Musk is Building the World's Biggest AI Chip Factory


Introduction

The AI and tech worlds were put on notice this weekend. On March 21, 2026, Elon Musk took the stage at the defunct Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, Texas, to officially unveil the Terafab project[1]. Structured as a massive joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, this monumental 20-25 billion facility is designed to be the most ambitious, vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant in history[1][2].

The "Why" Behind Terafab
Why is an automaker and space exploration company getting into the highly complex world of chip manufacturing? According to Musk, the current global semiconductor supply chain simply can't keep up[3][4]. While existing partners like TSMC and Samsung have been instrumental, Musk projects that within three to four years, external foundries will hit a wall in meeting his companies' demands[2][5]. Between scaling millions of Optimus humanoid robots, rolling out Cybercab robotaxis, and powering xAI's massive data clusters, Tesla requires an unprecedented volume of silicon[2][5]. Terafab is Musk’s in-house solution to avoid a catastrophic supply bottleneck[2][5].

What They’re Building
The target metrics for the Texas-based factory are staggering. Terafab is aiming to utilize ultra-advanced 2-nanometer process technology, consolidating everything from chip design and lithography to memory production and advanced packaging all under one roof[1][5]. The long-term goal is to produce 100 to 200 billion custom chips annually, culminating in one terawatt (1 TW) of AI computing power per year[1][5]. This output includes the upcoming Tesla AI5 inference chip, as well as specialized, high-power processors hardened for extreme environments[5][6].

The Space Connection
Perhaps the most sci-fi aspect of the Terafab announcement is its integration with SpaceX. Musk revealed that a large portion of Terafab’s compute output will be directed toward space-based orbital AI satellites[2][6]. By taking advantage of the vacuum of space for thermal cooling and harnessing direct solar energy (which is far stronger in orbit), Musk envisions orbital data centers becoming cheaper and more efficient than terrestrial ones within a few years[2][7].

Conclusion
Building a cutting-edge chip fab from scratch is a Herculean task that normally takes decades and hundreds of billions of dollars, and critics are already questioning the feasibility of the timeline[3][7]. However, if Terafab succeeds, it won't just secure Tesla's future hardware needs—it could fundamentally rewire the global semiconductor industry and quite literally propel AI into orbit.

Apple CarPlay still has a few problems I wish they would fix

I am a big fan of Apple CarPlay ever since I purchased a compatible car. I love hands free calls and texts and being able to ask Siri if there is a game tonight. There are just a few issues I still have with it. First I wish Apple would open it up a little more to different apps. Second I wish 3rd party apps would work a little more seamlessly. Third I wish they would make a way that audio apps are automatically included.

Apple Maps have improved a lot over the years. I love that they include the speed limit now and at least in my area, the traffic seems to be quite accurate. I just like to have the choice to use other map sources. If they would allow an app like Waze to be on their system it would give me an alternate option. I like that Waze gives better updates on things like hazards and changing traffic. 

I have had a lot of trouble with apps like Pandora and iHeart Radio getting stuck and not loading properly. This often requires you to force close the app and reopen it, not something that can be done safely while driving. 

I also wish that the Overdrive app would be added to CarPlay. I love to get audiobooks from the library to listen to, but I would love it if I could start a book easily while driving. If Apple would make it so you could start whatever you were listening to on any app I would love that, because sometimes when I am listening to Pandora I get bored and want to listen to a book for a while, but there is no way that I know of to get back to the book without looking at your phone.

The new Tesla Roadster

Last month Tesla announced a new Roadster and it is slated to be incredible. With 1.9s, 0-60mph acceleration and a top speed of more than 250 mph. All while being a 4 seater. It will also have an unbelievable range of 620 miles on a charge. If you want to buy one production isn't expected to begin until 2020 and you will have to put $50,000 down.

So how much will one of these cost? It will be $200,000 or ($250,000 if you get a founder's edition). This is an incredible bargain because it's faster and more powerful than million dollar supercars while being all electric. It still has a beautiful design including a lightweight glass roof that can be stowed in the trunk for a convertible like experience. I personally think that is a very clever design.

Tesla is about to release the Model 3


Tesla is planning to roll the first Model 3 off its production line this Friday. The Model 3 is an electric car with a 215-mile range and a price of $35,000. While this is two weeks earlier than initially planned, don't expect to be driving a Model 3 anytime soon. If you haven't pre-ordered a car yet, Tesla is estimating mid-2018 or later. My guess is much later since they are expecting to be making about 20,000 cars a month by December. Even if you have already put in an order for the car, they received 276,000 orders in the first two days after pre-orders opened last year.

So whats all the hype about this car?

Well, a huge factor is that it includes all the hardware for full self-driving capabilities, but who knows when they will finish the software for that. I think the biggest selling point is that they offer a lot of the features you expect from Tesla in their most affordable car yet. You get supercharging capabilities, lots of storage and a premium car feel. It will be interesting to see what the final specs of the car are upon release, but I have no doubt that they will give everything that people expect as usual.

Electric Cars - Where are they at in early 2017?

One thing I have been passionate about for a while now is electric vehicles. In my mind, they seem like the future of transportation and offer an unbelievable ability to use many different sources to generate their power. It might be worth looking into how energy is produced in your area because lots of places still use a lot of fossil fuels such as coal to produce their electricity. I should mention as a disclaimer that I do not own an electric vehicle because I live in an apartment that has no place to charge it but do hope to own one someday soon. I still am an enthusiast and have managed to learn a lot about them over time.

My current favorite reasonably priced electric car is the Chevy Bolt EV. This car offers a lot of great features, but best of all it can go 238 miles on a single charge. Although, this places it in an unusual position. It can travel quite far on a single charge definitely farther than any sane person would want to commute to work, but it also allows for most day trips to be able to be completed on a single charge. It still has a lot of problems with long distance travel, and it is extremely lacking in its ability to plan routes based on electric charging stations.




When it comes to long distance travel, no one has beaten the Tesla. They have an elaborate network of chargers and offer built-in features to help you find them, but this all comes at a price. Currently, they are the most expensive electric vehicles on the market, but they will be starting production soon on the Model 3 which will be even cheaper than the Chevy Bolt EV at 35,000 and still offer a 215-mile range. It will also feature many of the other benefits that Tesla offers including hardware for autopilot. This makes it a great deal in the long range electric vehicle market. They also offer up to 351 miles on their very expensive Model S if you get the bigger battery.




Most people will never need that kind of range on an EV, and there are a number options that are ideal for city driving and can offer significant savings over the longer range vehicles. One of the best examples of this is the VW Golf Electric car. This car can go 83 miles per a charge and only costs 21,495 after federal incentives. This is a great value for general commuting and city driving needs, which is what most people need their vehicles for. It may be a little bit concerning if your commute does push you toward 83 miles, but if you could charge at work that would solve that problem completely.




As far as vehicles go these are some of the best options out there. Some other factors to note are that you will need to install a charging port in your home. Although most of these vehicles offer charging from a standard outlet, you will need a faster way of charging. This can be expensive to install and will likely require a visit from an electrician.

          


One of the biggest benefits of an electric vehicle is how little service they need. Most of them don't need oil changes and features like regenerative braking can save on your brake pads, and the electric motors themselves can last a very long time. The biggest fear is having to replace the battery pack. This is a legitimate concern because of how expensive they are, but they are designed to last a very long time. Roughly 10 years or more on many vehicles. They also are continuously dropping in price which means it will likely be much lower in price when it comes time to replace it.
